It’s All About The DHA and EPA

Omega three fish oil contains two main fatty acids called Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA). Both are considered very beneficial for humans and help almost every area of the body’s development and function.

DHA is the main fatty acid responsible for healthy brain development and function in children. It has a proven effect on children’s learning abilities.

Which is one of the main reasons why so many parents would like to include it in their child’s diet. Not only is it a key ingredient for a healthy brain, but it has also shown to help heart and lung health as well.

EPA is the other fatty acid that’s responsible for regulating blood pressure, easing inflammation and gives needed nutrients for healthy skin.

These results are just the tip of the iceberg since there have been many studies that have shown benefits in many more serious conditions like Asthma, Arthritis, Cancer, Depression, Anxiety and even ADHD in children.

The combination of both fatty acids is why Omega three fish oil supplements are greatly talked about in the media.

The human body is able to convert EPA into DHA, though it’s not possible to do it the other way around. This is why it’s recommended to look for supplements that have an adequate amount of both fatty acids. Many don’t include any DHA at all.

Things To Look Out For

One thing to consider when choosing a supplement with Omega three is to avoid very high levels of Vitamin A.

Although it’s a good vitamin for healthy eyes and immune system, very high levels of it can become toxic and are potentially harmful for children. There is no need for Vitamin A to be included, so do check the label.

How To Find Out The Child Dose Of Omega Three

There isn’t yet any Government guideline or specific recommend daily amount for children.

But the benefits of taking Omega three have been shown from women in pregnancy right through to early infancy, and on into adulthood and seniors.

It is wise to consult with your child’s physician before giving any supplements. This sensible precaution may help avoid any problems due to allergies or irritation from fish-related foods or products.

The quality and purity of the fish oil will lessen any side effects that may be experienced. Purity in particular is important as lower quality supplements will still contain some traces of mercury and other toxins (you can read more here about mercury in fish oil capsules).

Quality Is Everything

Higher quality supplements will be fresher, and the manufacturers will have taken much greater care to ensure all the benefits of fresh oil stay in the product you eventually receive. So clearly a beneficial dosage level will also depend on the quality of the oils too.

Ultimately the specific dosage will vary from one child to another. But with a child’s medical history, age and current diet, the physician should be able to give you guidance as to the exact starting dosage that will benefit your child’s development and overall health.
